May

Perfect for spring gardening, the month of May is the time for some lawn attention. Cutting it down to a third of its normal length and leaving some clippings behind to foster growth is good practice.

As the weather is consistently warming up it is probably safe to plant heat-loving plants, as well as fall blooming perennials.

Abundant watering is necessary if not enough rain.

Gardening: Care for the Late Spring Season

  • Weed.

Starting weeding early is best; hand dig them out at the root system if they are small and young.

  • Sow and plant.

This is a great time for sowing, lots and lots! Then plant out or pot up seedlings when weather allows.

  • Bugs.

Keep an eye out for bugs and apply biological control if you choose to do so.

You probably want to empty out some of the early spring pot displays. Take cuttings and pot them up as they take root and grow.

May is also a good time to get dahlia tubers out of storage and start potting them up. - By the end of the month the temperatures may be ready to plant them out.

Sow more, plant out more, and weed some more.
